I guarantee this is not the first article or blog post that you have read on the topic of feminism, however I hope you find my take unique. I am a feminist like most other stereotypical feminist in regards to the following opinions:
– I believe men and women deserve equal pay for doing the same job.
-I believe men and women should have equal amounts of paternity and maternity leave.
-I do not believe it is my soul job to make the home and child-rear.
-I do not believe it is my partners soul job to provide for the family.
-I do not think that video games, trucks, and other masculine associated things belong to just boys.
-I do not believe dressing up, musical theater, and things commonly associated with girls belongs to just girls.
-A man should be able to cry openly and not be judged, just as a woman should be able to be firm in her opinions without being called bossy or worse.
In all of these ways I am striving to achieve equal to a man like most other feminist. Yet, I do not agree as a feminist I am striving for equality. Why? Because I already have it. What do I mean by this? I am already equal to a man by right of my dignity. I have just as much human dignity as a man, I am just as important in this life as a man; I do not need to be told I am equal to a man in this sense. I already know intrinsically that I am equal through my faith and understanding of my human dignity of which I am endowed. I do not strive for equality. I strive to achieve equally to a man. The moment I say I am striving for equality with a man is the moment I admit my human dignity is less than, and I refuse to believe this is true.
God gave each of us a soul that God loves with an intensity we cannot even being to comprehend. In the book of Genesis, God created man and woman. God pulled woman from the side of the man in order to be a partner to man. THE SIDE! This means woman and man stand side by side, as equals partners. Adam says “This one, at last is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2: 23). Women are equal to a man because biblically speaking women stand side by side with men, come from the same bones, same flesh, and same creator. No woman should doubt she is intrinsically equal to a man.
Is this intrinsic truth of equality being fully recognized today? Are women’s human dignity being recognized? Unfortunately sometimes no. Women in many countries are not able to achieve equally to a man. Women are treated as objects to be used, such as for the purpose of sexual desires. Yet this is the folly of some men and women who choose to treat a person as an object, instead of as a subjective being deserving of their human dignity. Although their ignorance may be true, it does not negate that woman are all still equal to a man in terms of importance. In God’s eyes, women and men are both beloved. Overall, my status as a human being is already equal to any man, therefore I do not strive for equality.
I hope this makes sense to all of you. I do not write to offend others, but to share my thoughts and feelings on the topic. I am always up for a healthy dialogue and hope this post gets you thinking about what it means to be a feminist. Until next time!
Peace, love, and my prayers to you,
The Soaring Magpie
